Athens: The Spirit of the 60sAthens: The Spirit of the 60s

Opening Monday, 3 November, the Hellenic American Union presents Athens. The Spirit of the 60s: A Changing Capital. Curator Nikos Vatopoulos will guide the public through the exhibition, which examines Athens’ development into a modern metropolis during the years of economic boom.

The exhibition features photographs from private archives, postcards, magazines and other materials that give us a feel of that ‘60s atmosphere and help to illustrate the social change that took place between the late ‘50s and the onset of dictatorship. The exhibition also presents examples of new buildings that embody this social change and have since become landmarks, such as the Hilton. “The point of this exhibition is to think about Athens during that dynamic period. Today, 50 years later, we are in a position to take a more nuanced look at an era that was surprisingly contradictory”, says Vatopoulos.
