Cosmas Xenakis: A Comprehensive Presentation

Paintings, sculptures and photographs of works by the pioneer of post-war art in Greece, Cosmas Xenakis, are all being presented as part of the Cosmas Xenakis 1925-1984 exhibition being held at the Benaki Museum. It will also feature audio-visual clips of his famous Polytechna performances, accompanied by material on his life and times, and pieces from his personal collections.

This phenomenal artist has engaged in painting, sculpting, architecture and urban planning, and is also the creator of what he calls Polytechna, a unique type of performance art combining painting, sculpture, theatre and dance.

Xenakis is an aficionado of folk creativity and a collector of utilitarian objects, ceramics and tools. He is a complex and interesting character who has – among other things – made a major contribution to the regeneration of Greek art.

The exhibition has been designed and curated by George Hadjimichalis in honour of this pioneering artist, and is the first real attempt at providing a comprehensive presentation of his multifaceted oeuvre.
