Athens provides a choice of all kinds of entertainment; there is an amazing number and variety of events, artists and different kinds of music and dance on offer.

Athens is the only European city with 148 theatre stages. You can even have an unbeatable theatrical experience in a vintage “Orient express”.

The Greek National Theater

The Greek National Theater features 5 stages: the Main Stage and the Nikos Kourkoulos Stage at the Ziller neoclassical building (on Agiou Konstantinou street), the Marika Kotopouli Stage, the Katina Paxinou Stage, where the Experimental Theatre is based, and the New Rex which consists of performances, activities and workshops designed especially for children and young adults, at the beautifully restored art-deco Rex Theatre (on Panepistimiou/ Eleftheriou Venizelou street).

The National Theater presents an innovative and diverse repertory, encompassing Greek, international, classic and contemporary theater throughout the year. Most of its summer productions are revivals of Greek Drama plays: tragedies or comedies which are performed in open air ancient theaters all over the country and abroad.

If you want to be actively involved in rehearsals and productions and discover hidden aspects of its history and the auditoriums as well, you only need to participate in the activities that the National Theater organizes.

Independent facilities have been installed in the Ziller building, for people with hearing difficulties.

Some performances of the Greek National Theater and of other stages are accompanied by English surtitles.

Greek Art Theater “Karolos Koun”

Opt for a theatrical performance in one of the two stages of the Greek Art Theatre “Karolos Koun”: the small amphitheatre at the Orpheus Building (on Pesmazoglou Street) or “Theatre Karolos Koun” on Frynichou Street in Plaka. For over seven decades, the Art Theater has always been a place where every classical and contemporary trend of the world theatre interweaves and interacts with the trends and concerns prevalent in Greece, resulting in a distinctively Greek cultural identity. Its pioneering interpretation of the Ancient Drama, soon brought the company worldwide recognition and fame.

Hellenic Cosmos Cultural Center

The "THEATRON" as part of Hellenic Cosmos (on Pireos street) is an important cultural area in Athens, hosting theatre, music and dance performances, from Greece and abroad.

In “Technopolis” (Gazi), the cultural centre of Athens Municipality, the landmark of the Gazi district, there is always something to do. Concerts and festivals, theater and dance performances, events for children, film screenings and modern art exhibitions take place in the old gas factory courtyard.

If you want to laugh, join Karagkiozis, a shadow puppet and fictional character, on adventures full of fun, frolics, laughter and imagination! You will find him in his permanent home in the City of Athens Melina Cultural Centre or travelling in many other spaces. Karagkiozis has also a unique museum created by the shadow-player Eugene Spatharis in Maroussi, northern Athens.

Greek Dances Theater “Dora Stratou”

For a traditional Greek Dance performance, book a ticket in the 860-seat garden Greek Dance Theater Dora Stratou, situated on the slopes of Philopappou Hill, just opposite the Acropolis and a walking distance from the picturesque quarter of Thissio. Many regions of Greece are presented in each performance through their authentic dances, costumes, musical instruments and songs.

If you love the night life, Athens is the ideal place for you. It is a city that never sleeps. Bars and restaurants open early but don’t fill up before 10pm. There are even a number of bars that carry on, after most of the city’s bars have been closed up for the night.

As music is a significant part of Athenians’ life, there is always a pub or bar hosting a live performance of rock, jazz or traditional Greek music.

If you are looking for an indie place, you can choose one of the intimate bars in Karytsi square, Psyrri and Panormou Street. For trendy lounges you have to head towards Kolonaki, Kifissia or Chalandri. Some of the most popular venues are in Pireos Street and Iera Odos Street. In the summer season, most of these clubs are “moving” in the southern suburbs of Athens, by the coastline. Poseidonos Avenue is one of the major summer nightclub spots in Athens.

There are many places where you can enjoy typical Greek music and can dance to it till dawn breaks.

There are also cosmopolitan bars or lounge cafés on the top floor of numerous hotels offering panoramic views of the city.

There are also tavernas with live Greek music especially in Plaka, Psyrri and Monastiraki. If you are in the mood for a Greek night out following your dinner plans, there are numerous options available.

Dancing all night long

Athens is a city to party in; you can dance in nightclubs playing mainstream music, where the atmosphere switches to popular Greek music, after a certain hour.

You will find parties in nightclubs or elsewhere every day on Olwyc application.
