The maître of cinema music, French composer and pianist Michel Legrand will have celebrated his 81st birthday before he visits Athens, one of the many stops of his latest tour.

This tireless living legend of music kick started his career with “I Love Paris” which sold 8 million copies and became a classic, easy listening album. He has written music for cinema productions like “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and “The Thomas Crown Affair”.

He started composing when he was 20 and has worked with many directors like Godard and Eastwood, as well as musicians like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davies, John Coltrane, and Nana Mouschouri. He has won 3 Oscars and 5 Grammys and has been nominated another 13 times.

In 2003, the French state acknowledged his artistic work, and granted him the Legion d’ Honneur medal.
He commented on this matter: “I am not interested in publicity. I never worked for fame or success. I always followed my own paths.”
