Joël Pommerat - L'histoire du commerce (Expired)

Image Gallery

This parabola by Pommerat conveys “the transition from ideology to capitalism” whilst exploring the concept of human solidarity and our moral limits. This work examines the evolution and history of commerce and compares it with the evolution and history of humanity.

This work presents two stories at two different points in time. The first takes place in the late 1960s and presents the efforts of four veteran salesmen to teach the tricks of trade to a young idealist. Influenced by the events of… May ’68 and having adopted the relevant ideology, he finds himself before an enormous dilemma, having to choose between "unemployment or immorality" and is pushed to suicide.

The second story takes place at the beginning of the 21st century, when an idealist of the past has become a powerful merchant, who attempts to pass on his consumerist reasoning to four men who have gone bankrupt and are can hardly survive in the labor market. Should we all be selling ourselves?
