Nabucco was the opera that established Giuseppe Verdi as one of the greatest composers ever. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth, the movie theater Danaos will be broadcasting a live performance of Nabucco taking place at the famous Scala of Milan. Exactly 170 years ago, Nabucco was performed for the first time at Scala, an event which helped to launch Verdi’s illustrious career. Verdi’s works were inspired by Italy’s glorious past and, with their impressive choruses, they stirred within the audience feelings associated with the country’s political upheaval.

Nabucco is an opera in four acts to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the Biblical story and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue. It follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (or Nebuchadnezzar n English) in 587B.C.  Known for his unbridled arrogance, King Nabucco demands to be treated like God.  When he’s struck by lightning, he turns to Jehovah, comes to his senses and frees the Jews. At the same time, he consents to his daughter Fenena’s relationship with Ismael, nephew of the King of Jerusalem.   In the end,  Abigaile espouses Jehovah and usurps power.
