Whirling Dervishes (Expired)

Their ritual is centuries-old. Their way of dancing, totally ecstatic. Their mannerisms, thrilling and bewildering. What exactly are they trying to convey? Come and find out.

The twenty members of the oldest Dervish order of Mevlevi comprise the best-known musical group of its kind, the Galata Mevlevi Ensemble. And this time, they travel from Istanbul to Athens to offer an experience surrounded by oriental mystique. Accompanied by live music, courtesy of seven musicians playing traditional instruments such as the ney and the bendir, the Whirling Dervishes will initiate the audience into the secrets of their dance.

One of the dance’s main goals is the cleansing of the participant’s soul and his reunion with God. Which is why, during their performance, they remove their black cloaks revealing their white attire underneath. Each whirl symbolizes a birth and their spread-out arms symbolize the wings of a bird. With one palm turned towards the sky and the other facing the earth, they seek the glory of God and transfer it to our material world. Their movements symbolize the universal dance of the planets around the sun, whereby the sun is God.

The group of dancers, recently seen in the movie “Mr. Imbrahim and the flowers of the Koran” is supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, better known as UNESCO, and will perform at the Badminton Theater in Athens on March 8th and 9th.
