Aristophanes’s “Ploutos” (Expired)

Image Gallery

A comedy of Aristophanes staged in an indoor theater? Cezaris Grauzinis, makes it possible.

Billed as one of the most important new-generation directors, Cezaris Grauzinis brings the famous ancient Greek comedy to “Emporikon” theater, following the play’s success at the Municipal Peripheral Theater of Patras.
Co-produced by “Elliniki Theamaton” it features young actors who not only act and sing, but also play various instruments on stage. “Ploutos” is Aristophanes’s last existing play and was presented to the Athenian public in 338B.C. Commenting on the unequal and unjust distribution of wealth, as well as the erosion of human values, he succeeded in portraying a society that’s distressingly similar to the one we live in today. Classic and contemporary at the same time, the play makes references to modern man’s efforts to survive amidst the economic crisis.

It’s a radical—and occasionally ruthless—approach to the original “Ploutos”, quite appropriate for the times we live in.
