The Chaidari Botanical Garden, more widely known as the Ioulia and Alexander N. Diomidis Botanical Garden, is the largest in the country. Created after the death of former prime minister Alexander Diomidis, the garden was donated to the University of Athens in order to establish a botanical institution. After 25 years of meticulous groundwork, the garden was finally opened to the public in 1975.

In the past few years, existing areas have been altered and upgraded, new areas have been added, paved streets and walking paths have been opened, and a monument honouring Greek patriots executed by German troops in 1944 has been erected.

The first botanical garden in recorded history was established in the fourth century BC by Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle. Adding to this proud Greek tradition, the botanical garden is the perfect place for philosophising, exploring or passing time with friends.
