Sailing uses the wind as a source of energy to propel travellers across the water on long voyages and leisurely ventures. In an art that dates back to the earliest years of Greek history, with vase paintings showing sailboats from as far back as 3000 BC, sailing captures the wind to drive the boat onward across the sea.
Sailing is a sport of open horizons that unleashes human ingenuity and endurance. It can help young people to develop strong leadership potential and a spirit of independence, as well as encourage social bonds that will last a lifetime.
Along the coastline of Attica there are numerous sailing clubs where experienced sailors teach their craft and invite you to experience life at sea. There are also a number of nautical clubs on the islands of the Argo-Saronic Gulf, including Aegina, Salamina, Spetses and Poros.
Courses cover navigation, oceanography, meteorology, the natural environment and, of course, practical experience - which builds team spirit and instils a sense of independence and freedom. Those interested in learning to sail the open seas can choose from amongst a wide range of vessels, including Finn, Soling, Lechner, Star, 470, etc.
Some particularly incredible experiences include open-sea sailing and competitive races, many of which are organised each year by nautical clubs in the Region of Attica.
