Aegina, the first capital of the modern Greek state in 1826, has stood proud for more than 5,000 years. Located at the archaeological site of Kolona, today’s modern city is decorated with neoclassical buildings, constructed during the time of Greece’s first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias. These magnificent 19th-century structures are vivid reminders of the city’s economic prosperity through history.

The rich commercial life of the city is most evident along the promenade, a thriving array of restaurants, hotels and tourist shops, extending into the narrow streets of the old city.
