Mitata (Kythera)

Overlooking the Gorge of Tsakonas, Mitata is a lush green village, located near the airport of Kythera. The first of the island’s villages to be mentioned (in 12th-century documents), Mitata took its name from the area’s many caves, or ‘mitata’, which were used by local shepherds tending their flocks on the mountainside.

Visitors should not miss the Tsakonas Gorge walk. Easily accessible from Mitata, the gorge is filled with thick greenery, old water mills, crystal-clear lakes and a small post-Byzantine church. A special variety of nectarine is grown here, known among the locals as ‘breasts of Aphrodite’.
