Square of Nea Smyrni

The central square of Nea Smyrni

This central square is one of the largest and busiest in Athens. It is the financial, commercial and administrative centre of Nea Smyrni.

Founded by refugees from Asia Minor, the square is the result of an urban development plan that began over 80 years ago.

Near the centre of the square stands a stone obelisk created by sculptor Vassos Kapantais. Towering 15 metres-high, it bears reliefs outlining the history of the inhabitants of Smyrna in Asia Minor. Due to the vast amount of open space on the square and adjacent streets, many official municipal ceremonies and other cultural and social events are held here.
