Since 1971, the Municipality of Athens Cultural Centre has been housed in downtown Athens. Being built to designs by Schaubert, the construction was supervised in the middle of the 19th century by Danish architect, Hansen. Initially housing the Elpis Municipal Hospital, the project was completed in 1858 and became the first civilian hospital in the city.

Today, the cultural centre has three large exhibition halls dedicated to Kontoglou, Iakovidis, and Gyzis, a huge amphitheatre named for the late politician Antonis Tritsis, and a theatrical museum. The three halls and the amphitheatre host a number of events, including lectures and seminars.
