The Tumulus of Marathon, 42 kilometres from Athens, is the burial mound of the 192 brave Athenian heroes who gave their lives during the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, where the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the mighty Persians.

Also called the 'Soros' by the locals, the Tumulus is the starting point of the annual Marathon held in memory of Spyros Louis, the first athlete to win the race at the Athens Modern Olympic Games in 1896, as well as the annual Marathon March for Peace.
